06 Apr SF Mountain Challenge
Welcome to this write up about the SF Mountain Challenge. Prepare for a look into a fantastic concept, a wonderful experience and a story of how two friends who want to change the world for the better came together to make it happen.
SF Mountain Challenge | The Concept
The SF Mountain Challenge is the brain child of two ex ARMY colleagues, Kingsley Simmons and Benjamin Yates. Although that sentence doesn’t do the creation of this event any justice at all.
There is no such thing as an ex ARMY colleague, we are more than work mates. The army builds bonds stronger than blood and this feeling of brotherhood never leaves us. We may not see one another for years, take our own path and become focused on individual goals. Nevertheless, when our energies collide again the result is infectious and people feel the need to be involved.
Kingsley served 15 years in the Coldstream Guards. In that time he progressed from a been recruit to training soldiers to go to war. After experiencing the full brunt of war over a number of tours Kingsley made the difficult decision to leave the Army. Back in Civi street he continued his passion for training people and perused a career as a Physical training Instructor.
I have had the privilege of speaking to Kingsleys clients when he is not there and their words often send goose bumps up my spine. All we ever want for our military brothers and sisters is for them to succeed. Hearing that Kingsley has changed lives and supported people to break through with their physical and mental health makes me feel a deep sense of pride. Kingsley is proof that war can change a man for the better.
As you have probably guessed I, Benjamin Yates, am the one writing this post. Therefore, I am reluctant to stroke my own ego. However, I will try to praise my self for my achievements so that you can see how Kingsley and I have connected so strongly again.
I served 5 years in the Coldstream Guards. During that 5 year stint I grew from a 16 year old boy into a man and as a result decided my calling was outside of the military.
Nevertheless, I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have experienced my Army career, because it connected me to a family of brothers I will have till the end.
My focus naturally went towards the outdoors after leaving. I become a qualified Mountain Leader and soon found my self wanting to help people with my skills. I worked along side the NHS to develop a course of therapy that eventually won an award for proving to be a sustainable program. Roll on a few years and I set up my business ‘Summit and Beyond’. I started offering my services to a wider audience. This is when I caught Kinglseys attention and he got in touch.
The Brain Child
Kingsley phoned me up after having a look at my website. He hit me with his idea straight off the bat. “I want to bring my fitness tribe to the mountains bro. I think we can show them how much they have progressed using a mountain challenge as gauge of that” obviously I said yes.
Here is our idea. It matches both Kingsley’s and my own ethos. Kingsley wants to support people to be healthy and live with a sense of well being through his fitness sessions. I want people to be healthy and live with a sense of well being through reconnecting them with nature and I use the mountain to do that.
Kingsleys sessions build confidence and resilience to a stage where people feel ready to push their limits in the mountains. Then he brings them to meet me. We share our connection, love for the outdoors and guide them around a tough route taking in multiple summits and covering 10 miles or more. once the challenge is complete we send everyone away with determination, drive and a renewed energy in life.
This is our idea and we wasted no time at all. I worked out a route that would work for the challenge and kingsley began spreading the word. After a few months of organising the route, working out logistics and making sure everyone was prepared we met for the first SF Mountain Challenge.
How Deoes the SF mountain Challenge Work?
Sim Fit 100
It all starts with Sim Fit 100. Kingsley set up Sim Fit 100 to support people on their health and fitness journey. He invites people along to the SF Mountain Challenge from the SF Boot Camps and 6 Week Transformation Camps. Below is a little bit more about those two services.
SF Boot Camp
“SF Bootcamp offers sessions around Leeds and Bradford and provides the very best in fitness training in the great outdoors. We build strength and fitness through a variety of exercises and activities based on aspects of fitness training used in the military. In addition we offer and provide fun, motivation and a community whereby you will be surrounded by fantastic members all joining in as part of their own fitness and health journey.” – Sim Fit 100 website
6 Week Transformation Camp
“The Transformation Camp is designed to help get you back on track with your health, fitness and body goals. A healthy lifestyle is achievable and once you have the mind-set it also sustainable.

Sim Fit 100 to SF Mountain Challenge
I would like to say the mountain challenge is the cherry on the cake, but it is just the beginning. Imagine you have been dedicated to your health and fitness through the SF Boot Camp and / or 6 Week Transformation Camp. You have attended the sessions and pushed your self with Kingsley and the rest of teams encouragement. The sessions are keeping you focused and you seem to be continually celebrating your progression. You are feeling stronger, more confident and like you are ready to take on a mountain.
Kingsley invites you along to the SF Mountain Challenge and it game on.
You book your place on the challenge and receive the joining instructions. As you gather the gear together you begin to feel the nerves because the Challenge is coming soon. Your mind starts to question your confidence. Have I done enough? Will I be able to complete the route? What if I cant do it? but your training with Kingsley kicks in and you tell your self
“I can do this, lets get the job done!”
We meet at the start point of the SF Mountain Challenge and have our final brief before heading off. Before you know it we are away. We hike over rough and challenging terrain. As we climb higher and higher it gets difficult and the steep sided mountains make you feel vulnerable and exposed.
You keep pushing on and eventually after hours of encouragement, team work and enthusiasm from the group we reach the summit. It feels amazing to have accomplished a mountain with a group of like minded people powered by the weeks and months of dedication you put into your own health and fitness at the Sim Fit 100 sessions.
Nevertheless, the summit is only half way. We continue on hiking, descending, scrambling, ascending, navigating over difficult rocky terrain until eventually we find our way to the finish line.
You did it! You feel amazing! Like you just leveled up your own confidence and conquered the world. You feel connected to the team around you and enjoy a shared sense of accomplishment. What an amazing experience. Once you are back in the nice warm accommodation a lovely feeling of tiredness floods over you. After a good feed you fall nicely asleep.
It is when you wake up the following morning that you realise that was just the beginning. The possibilities are endless and the only thing stopping you from conquering more and more mountains is your own willingness to keep on working at your health and fitness. You now know that anything is possible. When you surround your self with the right people who keep dreaming of bigger goals and greater adventures your health and fitness follow in line.
We have found that the SF Mountain Challenge builds bonds between people. The mountains have an energy about them that brings people together and inspires a sense of team work. After the past SF Mountain Challenges we have found that people remain in touch with one another and support each other to keep going out into the hills.
I have supported several members of the Sim Fit 100 community to become confident with hill and mountain skills after we connected on the SF Mountain Challenge, and we remain in touch. The community lift each other up and celebrate their micro successes. They share new adventures in the hills and feel proud of one another for continuing to develop their health fitness and adventure in the mountains.
How do I get involved?
We currently run 2 SF Mountain Challenges a year. To get involved you need to contact Kingsley at Sim Fit 100. Kingsley will assess your current fitness levels and support you to build the fitness required to hike safely in the mountains. From there you will receive an invite to book onto the challenge and then you will be handed over to me Ben.
I will provide you with all the relevant information, kit list, location and forms to complete. The next step is to continue training hard and then smash the challenge.
To get involved click the button below which will take you directly to the Sim Fit 100 Contact page. Drop Kingsley an email explaining you would like to get involved with the SF Mountain Challenge and he will be in touch with details.
