Short History of Wainwright
Alfred Wainwright walked, photographed and documented 214 fells in the Lake District. His books became popular and lake district walkers aspired to complete Wainwrights list of 214 fells.
Current Day
Today Alfred Wainwrights list of 214 fells has become the focus for fell runners. Joss Naylor lead the way in 1987 by completing all 214 Wainwrights in 7 days, 1 hour and 25 minutes. In 2014 Steve Birkinshaw achieved a new record completing the 214 Wainwrights in 6 days and 13 hours. Then in 2019 Paul Tierney completed the Wainwrights in 6 days, 6 hours and 5 minutes.
Whether you are looking for the challenge of a life time or a life long and relaxing project Alfred Wainwright and the fells of the Lake District have provided.
Our Wainwright Weekend
We will be taking more relaxed approach to our Wainwright experience. Nevertheless, you may find a similarity between the route we take and the route Steve Birkinshaw and Paul Tierney followed. By following the fell runners route we can take in multiple fells in a single day. The reason for this is because the fell runners have calculated the route with the least ascent over all the Wainwrights. Their route also offers a sense of adventure and it is exciting knowing that we are treading the foot steps of some of the worlds finest athletes.
What to Expect
We will be focusing on the Eastern fells and working around the weather. If we land on a fair weather day we will hike up onto the higher Wainwrights, however if the weather is not in our favor we will focus on completing some of the lower Wainwrights.
My aim is to cater for the fitness levels of the whole group, therefore we will agree on a route building up to the weekend and aim to tick off some of as many of the Eastern Wainwrights as we can.
I will provide a Wainwrights tick list. Once we have completed the weekend you can tick off all the hills we complete and then join us on the next weekend to continue the project.
