SF Mountain Challenge 2022 – North Wales

The SF Mountain Challenge 2022 – Wild Ponies, Epic cliffs and Some of the Highest Mountains in the UK

4th June 2022 – SF Mountain Challenge North Wales. 10 Mile Challenge over some of North Wales most spectacular mountains.

This year our North Wales challenge will take us into the Carneddau. The Carneddau is the northern most mountain range of the Snowdonia National Park and supports some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the UK.

Most people venture up Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) or Tryfan because these mountains offer immediate epic photo opportunities and Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is the highest mountain in North Wales. Nevertheless, Carnedd Llewellyn stands at 1064 meters only 21 meters lower than Snowdon but Carnedd Llewellyn sees a lot less foot fall, feels extremely wild and is home to wild ponies.

The Route

Our route starts in the Ogwen valley at the camp site after a couple of hundred meters warming up on the flat we will begin the ascent up Y-Braich. Y-Braich is a test for the glutes as we push out the long sustained ascent eventually gaining height with the reward of amazing views over to the north and back to the south. This is the area we are most likely to see the wild ponies.

After we summit Y-Braich the ridge line becomes a lot thinner and starts to feel exposed. We will scramble down for a few meters before needing to scramble back up again. Eventually we will make our way onto good paths again before we summit Carnedd Llewellyn Snowdonia’s second highest mountain.

The ridge line levels out and becomes easier to walk but the views off to the north appear like something from Lord of the Rings. Although the ridge line seems obvious it is essential not to venture too far off our line because the drops are deadly, but at the same time inspiring.

We will make our way off the summit of Pen-yr-ole-wen down a short scramble to a beautiful mountain lake before descending back into the valley and back the campsite to complete our loop.
