Is This Challenge for You?

If you have experience walking in the mountains and your fitness is to a very good level the Extreme Challenge is for you. The route we are following takes in some of the Lake Districts most challenging terrain. We will not be rock climbing but there are a number of scrambling sections, therefore you must feel confident to hold your own as we pass through this extreme environment.

Extreme Challenge

Start: Wasdale Head Campsite / Car Park

Finish: Wasdale Head Campsite / Carpark

Time: 10 to 12 hours

Distance: 13  miles / 22 Kilometres

Ascent: 1982 meters of ascent

This challenge is for experienced mountain walkers with very good fitness. We will begin the route with the Advanced group at Wasdale Head and make our way to a huge mountain lake ‘Sty Head Tarn’ at this point we will watch the Advanced group head off up on to Scafell Pike as we embark on what can only be described as hellish beauty.

We will summit Great End, Kirk Fell, Pillar, Steeple, Red Pike and Yewbarrow before making the quad destroying descent back to Wasdale head. The Extreme route has a number of extremely steep ascents and descents with some sections of exposed and carful scrambling. The route does not require a rope, although it does require confidence and focus.

After summiting Great Gable we enter into a very remote area of the Lake District. Kirk Fell is deceiving and throws a steep descent at us at the last minute. The views from the ascent of Pillar down the sheer north facing cliffs are epic and do not leave much to the imagination.

Lake District Guided Walks

Steeple is an out and back peak, meaning we have to navigate out to a thin fin shaped hill which supports amazing views out to the west before retracing our steps back toward the East. Red Pike is a nice curvy hill with a steep descent at which point we are met by the scramble up onto Yewbarrow.

Once we have summited our final peak Yeawbarrow we will descend back to Wasdale head to meet up with the rest of the crew.

The SF Mountain Challenge Lake District works as follows

Advanced Challenge

The advanced challenge is for those of you who have been training and keeping fit. We label it advanced because a beginners outing wouldn’t challenge people who are focused and progressing with their fitness. Nevertheless, the mountains provide one of natures greatest challenges and a full day out hiking will test those fitness sessions.

Extreme Challenge

The Extreme Challenge is for people who have some experience hiking in the mountains, have a very good level of fitness and are prepared to be out into the evening. The Extreme challenge is exactly as it sounds. The terrain is brutal and the distance means we have to move quicker than the relaxed pace of the Advanced Challenge.
