About this service
Summit and Beyond offers mountain adventures with a different perspective. Our mission is to reconnect people with nature, inspire confidence, build resilience and teach the skills needed to remain safe in the mountains. Our guides believe that everyone should have the skills to head out into the mountains, so while you are on your guided walk please ask questions and take as much information with you as possible.
Blencathra is the first big mountain you see when driving along the A66 from Penrith. The razor like features of Sharpe edge and the steep slopes towering above the road make it feel like a giants welcome to the Lake District.
Blencathra has some of the most fun ridge lines to move up and the views are stunning. With the North Pennines only a few miles away to the east and the Lake District to the south west we have the best of both views.
The route we have planned to the summit of Blencathra is ‘Halls Fell ridge’. We start this route from Scales, parking near the White Horse Inn . The trail hugs the foot of Blencathra contouring into beautiful rock formations created by the water flowing from the summit.
The route swings north and follows Halls Fell ridge all the way to the summit. Halls fell ridge opens up impressive views of the Lake Distict out to the south west. As the summit gets closer it is possible to see the North Pennines over to the east. Blencathra provides views of two very different but equally impressive environments, the mountains and the North Pennines
From the summit the most scenic route back into the valley is down to Scales Tarn, a magical lake framed by Sharpe Edge. The route follows the river for a while before the trail loops back down to Scales.
This is a fairly exposed route and not for the faint hearted. If you would like to read more about the route check out our blog post here. Nevertheless, we can alter the route if you would like to take a more relaxed approach to reaching the Summit of Blencathra.
Would you prefer a less extreme route to Blencathra Summit?
If you are happy with the route we have suggested go ahead and book your place. If you would like to arrange an alternative route contact us and we will work with you to create a route that suits your needs.
